In the vibrant sugarcane fields of Fiji, a new era of leadership is taking shape. Nemai Diloma, a dynamic 26-year-old, is making strides as a Roving Sector Assistant with the Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) in Nadi. Her journey signifies not just personal achievement but also underscores the resilience and commitment of women in agriculture as they evolve this essential industry.

Having recently graduated from Fiji National University (FNU) with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Nemai’s passion for the sugar sector blossomed when she joined FSC earlier this year.

“This role is a fantastic opportunity to apply my studies while gaining practical experience in an industry that is crucial to Fiji’s economy,” she expressed. As a Roving Sector Assistant, Nemai actively supports sugarcane farmers at every stage, from planting to harvesting. Her dedication is evident in her proactive collaboration with growers to ensure high-quality sugar production.

“I enjoy working with the growers; every day presents new challenges and chances to learn,” she stated. Although she has encountered language barriers and operates in a male-dominated field, Nemai’s determination and flexibility have been pivotal to her achievements.

“Through a willingness to learn, I’ve enhanced my communication skills, which are vital for building strong relationships with our growers,” she noted. Recently, she showcased her leadership by guiding a team of farmers through a challenging planting season.

A pivotal moment occurred when she stepped up in the absence of a teammate, reinforcing her belief in women’s potential to thrive in leadership positions within agriculture. Her team successfully concluded the planting season, highlighting her effective leadership capabilities.

Nemai appreciates the mentorship and support she has received at FSC, which she believes has been crucial to her development. The encouragement from her colleagues has played a significant role in her journey, emphasizing the importance of a nurturing work environment for empowering women.

“The support from my colleagues has been vital. Teamwork, promptness, and determination are key to reaching our objectives in the sugar industry,” she remarked. Looking to the future, Nemai is optimistic about the rising participation of women in agriculture, viewing it as a transformative force and a beacon of hope for the industry’s prospects.

“The sugar industry holds tremendous opportunities for women, but it requires commitment and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone,” she advised, offering encouragement for those looking to follow her path.

Nemai’s experience inspires other women to take control of their careers and contribute to the agricultural sector’s evolution.

“I firmly believe in women’s ability to lead and bring innovation to agriculture, and I am proud to be part of this transformative journey,” she concluded, motivating women to step up and leave their mark in the sugar industry.
