To combat the labor shortage in sugarcane farming, the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Sector has welcomed five Tractor Service Providers (TSPs) in the Western Division, aimed at assisting sugarcane planters and fertilizer applicators. This initiative comes through the Ministry’s Farm Mechanisation grant programme, impacting TSPs located in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki.

During a handover ceremony in Ba, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, emphasized the importance of this initiative in boosting productivity in the sugar industry. He noted that the programme addresses significant challenges such as labor shortages and escalating production costs. “We recognize that to tackle these issues, we must prioritize farm mechanisation as a vital strategy to enhance sugar productivity,” Mr. Singh stated, highlighting the programme’s role in modernizing the sugar industry, reducing production costs, and increasing crop yields.

Noa Kautoga, president of the Varavu Farmers’ Cooperative, praised the government’s ongoing support for sugarcane farmers through various initiatives. He remarked, “The government’s efforts, particularly through the Ministry of Sugar, significantly aid farmers. Initiatives like the mechanization programme enable us to adopt modern techniques and address labor shortages effectively.”

The Minister elaborated that the Government is committed to fostering a more sustainable and competitive sugar industry through such initiatives. He mentioned that the Farm Mechanisation grant programme provides a 50 percent subsidy on machines, making essential equipment more affordable for TSPs. Moreover, these providers will offer their services to farmers at subsidized rates, particularly for cane planting and fertilizer application.

This initiative not only aims to alleviate labor shortages but also highlights the dedication of the Government to support the sugar industry’s evolution and sustainability.

In summary, this program represents a significant step toward modernizing the sugar industry while supporting farmers through affordable mechanization solutions. It showcases a proactive approach to addressing critical challenges within the industry and signals a hopeful future for sugarcane farming.
