Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the CEO of the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF), has highlighted the crucial role of research in the survival of Fiji’s sugar industry. In a recent interview, he pointed out that access to science-based information is essential for sugarcane farmers as they face challenges such as climate change and pest infestations.
SRIF is actively involved in various initiatives aimed at supporting farmers, including plant breeding, pest and disease monitoring, and the implementation of effective farm management practices. The institute has developed 19 commercial varieties of sugarcane, each resulting from extensive research and testing. Furthermore, SRIF offers recommendations on fertilizer application to enhance crop yields.
The urgency for research becomes even clearer in the wake of natural disasters like the floods that have recently impacted sugarcane farms across Fiji. Previous reports have documented SRIF’s swift actions during such crises, with teams deployed to assess damage and provide timely assistance to affected farmers. This historical context underscores the institute’s commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sugarcane industry.
The proactive approach taken by the Sugar Research Institute reflects an ongoing commitment to not only support farmers but also to foster resilience against environmental challenges. As the agricultural sector navigates the complexities of climate change and other adversities, the integration of scientific research is imperative for bolstering productivity and securing a prosperous future for Fiji’s sugar industry.
