The Sugar Industry Tribunal has encountered significant delays in submitting its financial reports due to ongoing staff turnover and insufficient funding, as outlined by tribunal registrar Timothy Brown. During a recent appearance before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, Brown explained that frequent resignations among accountants have complicated the timely filing of financial records since 2016.

He noted that the tribunal has experienced a revolving door of accountants, which hinders continuity, as new hires must familiarize themselves with existing processes. “We were going for one accountant after another,” Brown remarked, mentioning that the position’s low salary of around $20,000 contributes to the challenges in retaining skilled professionals.

Brown emphasized that without adequate financial support, securing experienced professional assistance has proven difficult. “We needed professional assistance, but we didn’t have the budget, which was costly,” he stated. He assured the committee that he is committed to overcoming these obstacles and restoring the tribunal’s financial accounts to proper order.

This situation reflects broader issues within the sugar industry that have persisted for years, including declining production, reduced farmer engagement, and financial instability. Past discussions have highlighted the lack of strategic planning and performance indicators affecting various sectors within the industry.

Despite these hurdles, Brown expressed optimism about resolving the financial reporting issues and improving the tribunal’s financial governance. Enhanced financial support and the stabilization of staff could lead to better reporting practices, ultimately benefiting the health of the sugar sector in Fiji.

Advancements in this area may set a precedent for better management and oversight, ensuring that the tribunal not only meets its current obligations but also contributes positively to the overall stability of the sugar industry moving forward.
