Sudan’s ongoing conflict has now surpassed 1,000 days, a grim milestone that underscores the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in the country. U.N. aid officials have described the situation as “staggering,” with nearly 34 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), highlighted the fierce fighting in Kordofan, particularly around the besieged towns of Kadugli and Dilling, where access to essential resources like food, healthcare, and markets has been severely restricted.

The impact on the youngest citizens of Sudan has been particularly devastating. UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires reported that over five million children have been displaced from their homes, reflecting an alarming rate of 5,000 children forced to flee every day since the onset of the conflict.

In a call for urgent action, Laerke appealed for an immediate halt to hostilities and emphasized the necessity for tangible steps toward achieving lasting peace. He urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law to ensure the protection of civilians and aid workers amidst the turmoil.

The international community continues to watch closely, hoping for a resolution that can bring much-needed relief to the millions of affected individuals and families in Sudan.
