Recent monitoring of the Termite Control Assistance Programme (TCAP) has revealed that only a small fraction, just 5 percent, of recipients have utilized the grants for home renovations. The remaining 95 percent appear to have retained the funds without using them specifically for construction or repairs.
Assistant Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, indicated that this suggests many individuals might be waiting for the baiting process to conclude, or they may not have intended to use the funds as stipulated. Kiran emphasized the government’s commitment to continual oversight of the situation, aiming to ensure that financial resources are effectively allocated and that individuals in need can access appropriate loan facilities.
The government is actively working on solutions to combat the issue of termite infestations, including rolling out nationwide baiting efforts and improving product availability in the market. Kiran pointed out the importance of public awareness regarding termites and their impact on households, especially for those earning under $30,000 annually.
The responsibility now lies with the community to take action in rebuilding their homes and continuing necessary baiting efforts. Kiran expressed hope that financial institutions would recognize the needs of affected households and provide support through relevant financial products to assist with rebuilding efforts.
Notably, there has been a surge in applications for the TCAP subsidy, which has allowed the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) to identify new households grappling with termite issues that had previously gone unreported. The program has effectively encouraged residents to report infestations as they gain access to financial support.
In summary, the TCAP has seen limited use of its intended funds, but with ongoing governmental support and community involvement, there is potential for positive change and effective management of termite issues in Fiji. This collaborative approach could inspire more residents to take proactive steps, leading to healthier living conditions and stronger communities.
