Thirteen students were treated for injuries at Vunidawa Hospital following a vehicle accident in Navuniyasi, Naitasiri, yesterday morning. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road during the incident.
Initial reports indicate that the students were en route to their annual examinations when the accident occurred. Tragically, a cow was also believed to have died as a result of the vehicle veering off the road.
The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this accident. Additionally, the Ministry of Education has yet to provide a comment. This incident has sparked concerns over the safety of students, particularly those in rural and maritime areas, who often rely on carriers for transportation to school.
This is not the first incident involving student transport; in July, another accident occurred involving a rural service licence carrier carrying 11 students from Adi Maopa Secondary School, which lost control and fell down a hill near Daliconi Village, resulting in injuries to six students who were treated at Lomaloma Hospital.
As inquiries continue, it is crucial to advocate for improved safety measures and regulations regarding student transport systems to prevent such accidents in the future. The well-being of students during their commutes should be a priority, ensuring that adequate safety protocols and transportation options are available to them.
Summary: Thirteen students were treated at Vunidawa Hospital after an accident en route to their examinations due to a carrier losing control, raising safety concerns for rural student transportation.
