Students Association Maintains Distance from Ongoing Staff Strike at USP

The University of the South Pacific Students Association (USPSA) has stated that it remains independent from the groups organizing the current strike involving two staff unions at the Laucala campus. Association President Christopher Siliva expressed concern over misinformation that has led some members to consider participating in the strike based on inaccurate and exaggerated information, which may have affected their understanding of the situation.

Siliva noted that while some members might individually support the strike, the association as a whole will maintain its distance from it. He also raised concerns about the demands from the Fiji-based staff unions, which are calling for the removal of the Vice-Chancellor and President. According to him, such demands might not comply with the legal framework governing the Vice-Chancellor’s discipline at USP and could jeopardize the rule of law and the interests of all staff union members.

“It is critical for all parties to follow the established legal frameworks at USP to ensure fair and just outcomes,” Siliva stated. He acknowledged the important roles all staff play but warned that the strike could disrupt classes, delay academic progress, and impede access to vital services that students depend on, particularly with final examinations approaching.

Siliva emphasized the importance of open dialogue, respect for differing viewpoints, and a collective commitment to fulfilling educational objectives.
