Hundreds of students from 13 schools and community members will gather along Kings Highway, from Koronivia Roundabout to Rewa Bridge, tomorrow to participate in the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s (PRF) annual roadside campaign. This event celebrates both World Environment Day and World Oceans Day and is now in its third year, with the theme “Stand in Solidarity to Protect Our Environment.”
The campaign aims to enhance public awareness about environmental protection and encourage responsible waste management. Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, remarked that this initiative serves as a powerful symbol of collective responsibility and unity, promoting long-term behavioral change toward environmental stewardship.
The event will feature students and community members carrying placards with messages urging immediate action for the environment. Additionally, it will include a “Safe Space” session where participants can express their commitment through creative forms such as poetry, songs, and speeches. This inclusive approach is designed to integrate environmental consciousness into daily life and is also pet-friendly.
Deo highlighted the critical role that youth play in this movement, reflecting a hopeful outlook for future environmental initiatives. He emphasized that engaging young leaders is essential for cultivating a culture rooted in sustainability, underlining their capability to drive change.
The campaign benefits from the support of various organizations, including JICA Fiji, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, demonstrating a collaborative effort for a cleaner and more sustainable Fiji.
In a time when environmental challenges are increasingly pressing, this initiative represents a significant step towards fostering accountability and awareness among the public, especially the youth, ensuring that generations to come inherit a healthier planet.
