Thirteen individuals, including three students, were arrested yesterday in connection with the possession of illegal drugs. The arrests took place across two different school campuses, highlighting ongoing concerns surrounding drug use among young people.
Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations, Livai Driu, stated that one school is currently under investigation following the discovery of smoking paraphernalia in the dining hall. The school manager promptly reported this issue to the authorities, demonstrating a commendable commitment to student safety. Driu expressed appreciation for the proactive efforts of teachers and school management in collaborating with law enforcement to maintain a secure environment for students.
In addition to the students, several others were apprehended in various locations. A 33-year-old carpenter and a 47-year-old security guard were stopped at a Nadonumai roadblock where they were found with small plastic bags containing white crystals. Furthermore, a police raid in Waiyavi, Lautoka, led to the arrest of four individuals in possession of white crystals, smoking devices, and cash, which is believed to be linked to drug sales.
Other arrests included a 32-year-old mechanic who was caught with six bags of white crystals, and a 29-year-old man found with marijuana at a bus shelter in Ciri Junction. Additionally, a 46-year-old farmer was taken into custody at the Nadi Bus Stand with 161 branches of marijuana and cash potentially linked to drug trafficking. A 24-year-old from Natutu, Ba, was also arrested at the Ba Market Area for holding eight sachets of dried leaves believed to be marijuana.
All suspects are currently in police custody, and the seized drugs are awaiting analysis as investigations proceed. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by drug possession and misuse, especially among youth, and it emphasizes the importance of community vigilance and collaboration in addressing these issues.
This situation underscores the need for continued support systems in schools and communities to help prevent drug abuse and promote a healthier environment for students. With proactive measures and community engagement, there is hope for a safer future for all.
