The Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) is facing significant challenges mostly due to neglect and a lack of adequate funding, which has raised serious concerns within the community about its ability to maintain essential healthcare services. The Health Ministry acknowledges its limited resources, and while a volunteer-led clean-up initiative offered some immediate assistance, many systemic problems remain unresolved.

Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Penioni Ravunawa, emphasized the ongoing difficulty of managing long-term maintenance efforts with the current financial constraints. He acknowledged that hospital staff continue to work diligently under outdated conditions and with insufficient equipment, despite growing criticism over the hospital’s state and the slow pace of repair efforts.

The clean-up aimed at enhancing the hospital’s exterior—conducted by volunteers from various organizations including ANZ Bank—focused primarily on landscaping and visible maintenance. The hospital’s Board of Visitors, represented by Chair Esther Williams, highlighted the collective responsibility of the community to keep the hospital clean, underscoring its importance as a vital healthcare provider to the local population.

Ravunawa pointed out that collaboration with the community is essential for the hospital’s sustainability and cleanliness over time. With increasing healthcare demands in the Suva-Nausori corridor, structural issues and limited resources are exacerbating the hospital’s struggles. However, community involvement in such initiatives reflects hope for future improvements in CWMH’s condition.

This situation mirrors broader healthcare challenges across Fiji, including similar concerns raised about other facilities like Tavua Hospital. As advocates push for systematic reforms, there is an underlying positivity that these community-driven efforts will be part of a larger movement towards enhancing healthcare quality and access. Although significant changes are needed, the engagement of local communities in supporting their healthcare institutions offers a promising path forward for CWMH and Fiji’s healthcare system.
