Stronger Together: The Ratu Sukuna Bowl’s New Mission

The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition is about more than just sports participation. This was emphasized by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, on Tuesday.

The theme for this year’s Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted a challenge from Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, stating that the focus lies in the responsibilities of the respective forces and their contributions toward a better Fiji.

“It is more than about winning or losing; it symbolizes the spirit within our forces, reflecting who we are, what we represent, and how we can shape the future of this country,” Kalouniwai stated. He highlighted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has been on a path of reconciliation in recent months, aiming to move forward positively.

Chew mentioned that the Fiji Police Force is facing challenges related to drug issues that are affecting communities. He expressed hope that the upcoming months will embody the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl, encouraging a commitment to moral integrity in fulfilling their duties.

In addressing Kalouniwai, Chew noted that Nasova is the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl, expressing readiness from the Fiji Police Force to defend the prestigious trophy. He remarked, “As career police officers, we are trained to be suspicious of everyone, which naturally raises questions about strategies at play.”

The Police Force retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl last year after a draw, 11-11, at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. Chew further emphasized the urgency of addressing rising social issues within communities, advocating a strong stance against drugs. He also reaffirmed that the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa, showcased in 2022, belongs to Nasova, affirming its return to the area this year.

Salman Khan, Chief Commercial Officer of Vodafone Fiji, highlighted Fiji’s passion for rugby, noting that this event sees the disciplined forces compete not only for victory but for a trophy representing camaraderie, discipline, and spirited rivalry. He urged athletes to compete with integrity, passion, and pride, keeping in mind the legacy of past champions and the hopes of future generations.

The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is set for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with additional sports events scheduled for the same week.
