Lautoka Residents and Ratepayers Association president Narayan Reddy has called for stricter penalties for individuals who engage in stoning public transport vehicles. This appeal was made following an incident earlier this week where a bus operated by Classic Buses Limited was attacked in Lautoka, although thankfully, the driver was not harmed and only some glass was broken.
According to Adnan Mohammed, director of Classic Buses Limited, while their services will continue, they will implement additional safety measures to protect both drivers and passengers. Mr. Reddy emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that such actions endanger the lives of all involved, including both passengers and bus drivers. He suggests that many of these incidents may be attributed to intoxicated individuals or youths who do not fully comprehend the ramifications of their actions.
Reference to previous incidents indicates that bus stoning in the Natabua area is not a new phenomenon. Mr. Reddy remarked on the recurring nature of such offenses, noting that similar events have occurred in past years without resulting in injuries.
In terms of response from law enforcement, police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident and mentioned that investigations are ongoing. Queries directed to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Bus Operators Association have yet to receive responses, including attempts to reach Transport and Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau.
This situation highlights the ongoing concerns related to public safety in relation to both law enforcement and public transportation. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu’s prior warnings about violence against police vehicles resonate with Mr. Reddy’s call for increased safety measures, emphasizing the need for community cooperation to deter such acts of vandalism.
It’s hopeful to note that with heightened awareness and community engagement, there is potential for a collective effort to ensure safer environments on public transport. Increased vigilance and support from local residents could greatly contribute to reducing such disturbances, ultimately fostering a more secure and respectful community for all.
