Weather Update: May 8, 2025
Attention all beach bums and umbrella enthusiasts! A strong wind warning has been issued for the coastal regions of Viti Levu, so hold onto your hats (and perhaps your beach towels) as winds may gust up to 46 km/h! This warning stretches from Sigatoka to the Coral Coast all the way through Navua, Suva, Korovou, and Rakiraki, including the Southern Bua, Cakaudrove Province, Kadavu, and the smaller islands of Yasawa, Lau, and Lomaiviti. In short, if you’re planning to hit the waves or have a lovely picnic, you might want to rethink those plans unless you enjoy an impromptu kite-flying session!
Now, the situation is that a little something called a low-pressure trough is approaching from the west, bringing with it a promise of clouds and rain starting tomorrow and sticking around until Sunday. Make sure your raincoats are on standby because occasional showers are on the menu for almost everyone, especially over Navua, Suva, Nausori, and a few other areas.
For tomorrow’s forecast, expect all that rain, plus a few thunderstorms to add some drama to your day. Isolated heavy falls could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas, so avoid using your new boat as an alternative mode of transport!
As we look towards Saturday, the rain and occasional thunderstorms will still be in attendance – it seems they didn’t get the memo to leave. Winds will ease up a bit, transitioning to moderate to fresh from the northeast, so it might be a touch more pleasant, unless you’re planning on sailing, in which case, don’t say we didn’t warn you!
Here’s the breakdown for the main areas:
Navua/Suva/Nausori: Expect those strong southeast winds and occasional showers today. Tomorrow should bring more rain and a sprinkle of thunder, with wind speeds gradually calming as the day goes on.
Sigatoka/Coral Coast: Brace yourselves for strong winds and occasional showers today. Tomorrow’s forecast continues with the rain and potential thunderstorms – it’s sounding like a cozy day indoors.
Nadi/Lautoka/Ba: Today’s cloudiness brings some afternoon showers. Tomorrow, expect more rain and possible thunderstorms, reminding you that umbrella shopping wasn’t in vain.
Tavua/Rakiraki: The wind will be strong, with occasional showers today. Tomorrow promises more rain, so you may want to keep your flotation devices handy!
And for our friends in the Yasawa/Mamanuca group, expect the same strong southeast winds and showers today, with more of the same tomorrow.
Back in Labasa and Savusavu, it’s a cloudy affair today with isolated showers. Tomorrow doesn’t look to be much different – rain and thunderstorms will keep you on your toes.
Finally, in Rotuma, our beloved island is currently battling a trough of low pressure with substantial rain (and maybe a bit of thunder to spice things up). Moderate to rough seas will likely see a few ambitious sailors staying ashore.
So, buckle down as Mother Nature prepares her rain dance for the week ahead and remember – if the winds are too strong, it might be best to stay inside with a good book and a cup of tea!
