Beyond the headline

The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has issued a Strong Wind Warning for several island groups and coastal areas as a southeasterly wind flow prevails across the country. Strong southeast winds with gusts up to 45 km/hr are expected to affect the Yasawa group, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, and the coastal areas of Rakiraki and Udu Point. Overall conditions will feature moderate to fresh southeasterly winds and rough seas.

Cloudy periods with showers are expected through tonight across Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra, southern Bua, Cakaudrove, Taveuni and nearby islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu and nearby islands. Elsewhere conditions will generally be fine with only isolated afternoon or evening showers. Afternoon thunderstorms remain possible over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

Some local areas have specific wind changes noted. Strong southeasterly winds of up to 45 km/hr are highlighted for Yasawa, Taveuni, Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu island groups and for coastal Rakiraki and Udu Point under the existing warning. For parts of Rakiraki and Tavua, and for Taveuni, Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu, the bulletin notes stronger southeast winds developing from tomorrow in addition to the current conditions.

Temperatures will be warm. For Navua, Suva and Nausori expect a low around 24°C and a high near 31°C tonight, rising to about 32°C by Monday. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba can expect a low of 24°C and a top near 32°C. Sigatoka and the Coral Coast remain mostly fine with similar temperatures, while Labasa is forecast to reach up to 33°C. Savusavu, Nabouwalu and other northern areas will see cloudy periods with showers and possible afternoon or evening thunderstorms.

Rotuma is affected by a trough of low pressure and will experience occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms under moderate easterly winds and moderate seas. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue through Monday. Mariners and residents in the areas named under the Strong Wind Warning should note the rough seas and the potential for disruptive winds while monitoring further updates.
