Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has highlighted the essential need to balance economic growth with national security in light of increasing concerns over organized crime in the Pacific region. He acknowledged the challenge of identifying criminal elements disguised as investors, which pose risks to the nation’s safety.

Responding to a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) report, Tikoduadua emphasized the urgency of this issue, as the region’s vulnerability to organized crime groups has grown. He noted that effective border control, improved immigration procedures, and strengthened security forces will be necessary to address these challenges, including implementing strict vetting measures for individuals seeking to enter the country.

The report also details the significant quantities of illegal drugs seized by the Pacific Transnational Serious and Organised Crime Taskforce, which has confiscated over 4.5 tonnes of cannabis and various other drugs since 2019. Additionally, numerous members of outlaw motorcycle gangs and organized crime figures have been denied entry to Fiji and Tonga in recent years, showcasing the ongoing battle against crime in the region.

Minister Tikoduadua stressed the urgent need for rehabilitation facilities for drug addicts, pointing out the lack of specialized support for individuals struggling with addiction in Fiji. The absence of these centers hampers recovery efforts and exacerbates the overall drug problem. He highlighted the importance of cultivating trained professionals who can assist those in recovery, calling for collective action to establish these facilities amid broader discussions on addiction’s societal impacts.

As the community grapples with the fallout from substance abuse, it is crucial to recognize the effects of addiction on families and individuals, revealing the need for a concerted effort to combat this public health crisis. The pressing question remains whether there is the political will to advance the establishment of rehabilitation centers, paving the way for a more supportive approach to addressing drug addiction.

Commentary: Establishing rehabilitation facilities is not only a necessary step for addressing addiction but also an investment in healthier communities. By focusing on recovery, the government can empower individuals and families, ultimately fostering a stronger society and economy.

Summary: Minister Pio Tikoduadua calls for a balance between economic growth and national security amidst rising concerns over organized crime, particularly in light of drug trafficking. He advocates for the urgent establishment of rehabilitation centers for drug addicts in Fiji, citing the need for adequate resources and trained professionals to combat addiction and its devastating effects on families and communities.
