Lautoka FC’s prominent striker, Saula Waqa, is facing suspension after returning a positive drug test during the semifinals of the 2025 BiC Fiji FACT tournament. Despite this, Lautoka officials expressed confidence in Waqa’s innocence, citing his negative result from pre-tournament testing conducted by the association. The 29-year-old athlete is denying any wrongdoing and is set to appear before the disciplinary committee later this month.

Fiji Football Association CEO Mohammad Yusuf confirmed that Waqa could face significant penalties, including a fine and a potential three-year suspension due to this being his third violation, if found guilty. The disciplinary committee has the discretion to adjust the length of the suspension based on its findings.

Yusuf detailed the testing protocol, explaining that Waqa initially refused to provide a sample but later complied, resulting in positive tests for banned substances. Fiji Football is now planning to introduce random drug testing at various venues throughout the National League, aiming to promote fairness and integrity in Fijian football.

This latest incident adds to a troubling trend, as previously reported during the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship, where a significant number of players tested positive for drugs. In light of these ongoing issues, the Fiji Football Association is committed to enhancing its drug awareness initiatives and education about the dangers of substance abuse. This proactive approach offers a hopeful perspective on fostering a healthier sporting environment in Fiji.
