A strike by healthcare workers at Aspen Lautoka and Ba hospitals is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on February 6, 2025. This action was confirmed by the Construction Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF), which represents approximately 200 staff members including chefs, ward assistants, pharmacists, maintenance workers, ambulance drivers, security guards, and cleaners.

CETWUF National Secretary John Paul held a meeting with union members outside Ba Hospital today, as union representatives were barred from entering the premises. The decision to strike stems from ongoing disputes regarding wages and working conditions that have been unresolved since 2017, amid rising living costs.

The union has formally served a strike notice and emphasized the urgency of their demands, which have been largely ignored despite multiple attempts at negotiation. Union representatives expressed disappointment with Aspen Medical for the perceived lack of progress on salary adjustments. Paul highlighted the critical importance of addressing these issues, stressing that the workers can no longer tolerate the ongoing delays.

This situation reflects broader labor rights challenges within Fiji’s healthcare sector and highlights the need for fair compensation and improved conditions for healthcare workers. While the planned strike may disrupt hospital operations, it also represents a crucial opportunity for dialogue that could ultimately lead to positive outcomes for both the workers and the community they serve.

There remains hope that constructive discussions can emerge from this critical juncture in labor relations. Such negotiations would not only benefit the healthcare workers in their quest for fair wages but also enhance the quality of care provided to patients, showcasing the essential role that these workers play within the healthcare system.

In summary, the upcoming strike serves as a vital reminder of the ongoing struggle for labor rights in Fiji’s healthcare sector. It emphasizes the urgency for resolution and the potential for positive change through collaborative dialogue that prioritizes the needs of both employees and the community.
