Members of the University of the South Pacific Staff Union who are currently on strike have been urged to return to work following a directive from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. The Prime Minister has instructed Education Minister Aseri Radrodro to convene a council meeting.

Union president Reuben Colata expressed optimism about a favorable resolution, interpreting Mr. Rabuka’s call as a sign of the government’s commitment to address the issue at hand. He noted the positive impact of ongoing support from political parties and the Fiji Teachers Association during this time.

Colata mentioned that the staff has been directed to return to their duties, and they are hopeful that Minister Radrodro will fulfill his responsibilities effectively. He emphasized the need for progress, particularly regarding the investigation involving Professor Pal Ahluwalia.

The union president also highlighted the support from students who have recognized the problems occurring at USP, which played a role in the staff’s decision to temporarily halt their strike. He stated that the future of any further disruption would rely on the outcome of the upcoming council meeting.

If no progress is made, Colata indicated that the union would consult its members about the continuation of the strike, which currently has a mandate lasting until February 14, 2025. He expressed hope that the developments over the next week would align with the Prime Minister’s wishes to expedite the resolution process.
