Stride with Strength Walkathon Sparks Disability Inclusion and Fights Gender-Based Violence in Fiji

Advocate Nafitalai Uluinakorotabu, who is a proud alumnus of Queen Victoria School (QVS), recently celebrated the success of the “Stride with Strength” Walkathon, an initiative that champions disability inclusion and combats gender-based violence. Uluinakorotabu, a member of the class of 2003-2005, expressed his pride in the community’s efforts to bring the event to life, which not only served as a fundraising initiative but also as a vital platform for fostering unity among families, communities, and QVS supporters.

“The whole program was a success, and I’m very proud because, as a person with a disability, the QVS Old Boys have come together to fight for inclusion and also against gender-based violence,” Uluinakorotabu remarked. He emphasized that the event provided an opportunity for community members to come together and rally for common causes, showcasing the spirit of togetherness within the QVS community.

The event gained additional significance with the presence of notable figures, including Shamima Ali, Coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, and Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran. Uluinakorotabu noted that their participation added weight to the initiative, particularly encouraging male participants to engage in the cause.

Uluinakorotabu pointed out that Queen Victoria School stands out as one of the few schools actively addressing the issues of disability inclusion and gender-based violence advocacy. He indicated ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Women, the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, stating, “I think this could become an ongoing, annual event.”

He urged Fijians to stay tuned for information regarding the possibility of another walkathon next year, highlighting the importance of continued community engagement in addressing these critical issues. The enthusiastic response from participants underscores a collective commitment to making meaningful strides toward inclusion and equality within society.
