The Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has issued a strong admonition to parents regarding the prohibition of children begging on the streets in Fiji. This message comes in light of an investigation related to Mereseini Biaudamu, a street beggar in Nausori, who was found in the company of two children under her care.
Ms. Kiran clarified that these children were not biologically hers but were left in her custody by their mother, who denied any awareness of them begging. Notably, the parents of the children were receiving monthly allowances from the ministry meant for their support.
Emphasizing the potential dangers involved, Ms. Kiran stated that such actions expose children to serious risks, including exploitation and abuse, while also depriving them of a safe and nurturing environment. She reiterated that it is a legal obligation for parents and guardians to prioritize the welfare and safety of their children.
She also highlighted that forcing or encouraging children to beg is a violation of their rights and contradicts the national laws aimed at their protection. During this festive season, the ministry is actively urging the public to report any sightings of child begging to the proper authorities.
“We will not hesitate to prosecute offenders in collaboration with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of our children,” Kiran stated, calling upon all parties to work towards making 2025 a safer year for families and children alike.
In a hopeful message, Kiran urged everyone to contribute to creating a society where children can experience a secure and joyful holiday season. For those needing support or wishing to report concerns, the public can reach out via the ministry’s child helpline at 1325.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to protecting children’s rights and ensuring their safety within the community, establishing a brighter future for the younger generation in Fiji.
