The High Court in Lautoka has mandated detailed protocols for the destruction of 4.5 tonnes of methamphetamine held by the State. In an effort to ensure accountability and transparency, the court has ordered that the destruction process must be both photographed and ideally video recorded. Additionally, a Resident Magistrate from the local area will oversee the procedure.

Justice Aruna Aluthge specified that a police officer, not below the rank of Assistant Superintendent, appointed by the Commissioner of Police, will be responsible for the incineration or other safe methods of disposing of the illegal substances. Two weeks prior to the destruction, the court must be notified along with all involved parties, detailing the date, location, and method of destruction.

Legal representatives for the respondents will have the opportunity to observe the disposal, contingent on security protocols. After the destruction, the overseeing police officer must compile a report, signed by both the officer and two witnesses, confirming that the disposal adhered to the court’s order. This report must be filed in court within two weeks of the destruction.

These measures illustrate a commitment to maintaining a transparent judicial process, promoting public trust in the legal handling of illicit substances.

This approach not only emphasizes legal integrity but also serves as a strong deterrent against drug trafficking, reinforcing the government’s stance on combating illegal drug operations. As the process unfolds, it offers hope for improved drug governance and a safer community.

In summary, the High Court’s stringent regulations on the destruction of a substantial quantity of methamphetamine signal progress toward greater transparency in the judicial process and a robust legal framework to address drug-related issues in society.
