The Cabinet has approved the iTaukei Affairs (Great Council of Chiefs) (Amendment) Regulations for the year 2024. These regulations are intended to enhance the effectiveness of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) in fulfilling its role of advocating for and supervising iTaukei interests while making decisions that impact iTaukei communities.
The amendments aim to reinforce the GCC’s advisory capacity in several areas crucial to nation-building, fostering racial harmony, and promoting social cohesion. The GCC will concentrate on establishing strategic directions in vital sectors such as good governance, leadership, economic empowerment, cultural preservation, heritage, resource rights, education, health and wellness, environmental issues, climate change, and tackling violence against women and children.
This initiative reflects a proactive approach by the government to ensure that the iTaukei community’s voice is heard and prioritized in national matters, offering a hopeful vision for more inclusive policies and a united society.
In summary, the recent endorsement by the Cabinet signifies a significant step towards empowering the Great Council of Chiefs, allowing it to play a central role in the growth and well-being of iTaukei people, and ultimately benefiting the nation as a whole.
