Strengthening Ties: Solomon Islands and PNG Forge New Path Ahead

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele recently held a productive bilateral meeting with Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape, on the sidelines of the Honiara Summit 2025. This meeting aimed to reinforce the enduring ties between the two nations, showcasing their commitment to collaborative governance and mutual development, particularly as both countries navigate regional dynamics.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Manele extended his condolences to PM Marape and the citizens of Papua New Guinea following the death of former Prime Minister Sir Julius Chan, acknowledging the significant impact Chan had on the nation’s development. Manele emphasized the historical and cultural connections that predate colonial boundaries, reiterating the deep-rooted relationship between Solomon Islands and PNG.

In a gesture of goodwill, Prime Minister Manele accepted an invitation from PNG to attend the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations, set for September 16 in Port Moresby. Manele reaffirmed Solomon Islands’ respect for PNG’s sovereignty and declared non-interference regarding Bougainville’s political circumstances.

Both leaders recognized the importance of economic partnerships, with PM Marape expressing gratitude for the presence of over 50 PNG companies investing in various sectors in Solomon Islands, such as hospitality, banking, telecommunications, and agriculture. To further their cooperation, the two leaders agreed to formalize meetings between senior officials annually and to convene biannual meetings of their leaders.

This collaboration is promising for the future, as it signifies a commitment to not only maintain but enhance the bilateral relationship, paving the way for broader cooperation amid changing geopolitical circumstances in the region. Both nations stand to benefit from strengthened ties, showcasing the potential for a more cooperative Pacific community focused on mutual prosperity and resilience.
