New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape met in Wellington on Tuesday to reaffirm the strong partnership between their countries. The leaders focused their discussions on boosting trade and economic ties, alongside enhancing security and defense cooperation, while also addressing regional issues of mutual concern.

Luxon highlighted the significance of their relationship, stating, “New Zealand deeply values our friendship with Papua New Guinea, a crucial partner in the Pacific.” Both leaders signed a refreshed Statement of Partnership, which paves the way for a deeper bilateral relationship as they look forward to celebrating 50 years of diplomatic ties this September.

Marape remarked that the renewed partnership is designed to yield tangible results in key areas such as education, public sector support, and climate change, as well as advancing regional security. He emphasized the strategic importance of the agreement, particularly in strengthening cooperation in agriculture and fisheries, and fostering more regular discussions among leaders and officials.

As part of this commitment, Luxon announced a NZ$1 million (approximately US$572,000) investment aimed at enhancing Papua New Guinea’s public sector institutions, specifically targeting improvements in disaster preparedness.

The Papua New Guinea delegation, which includes Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko, is also scheduled to participate in various business and community events throughout New Zealand. This engagement is expected to further strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

This latest meeting underscores the commitment to bolster regional cooperation and pursue shared aspirations, fostering hope for a resilient and prosperous Pacific community, especially in facing challenges like climate change. The renewed partnership not only signifies a historical bond but also aims to ensure that both nations thrive together in a rapidly changing world.
