Japan and Papua New Guinea have solidified their commitment to enhancing their bilateral relationship and regional collaboration during a recent summit held in Tokyo. The meeting took place between Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba of Japan and Prime Minister James Marape of Papua New Guinea, coinciding with Marape’s official visit as a guest at Expo 2025 Osaka, highlighting Papua New Guinea’s National Day.

During the discussions, Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed Marape and emphasized the importance of their meeting as the two nations prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year. Ishiba expressed a desire to further strengthen ties, while Marape conveyed gratitude for the warm reception and shared aspirations for expanded cooperation.

The leaders reviewed key areas of collaboration, with Ishiba pointing out Japan’s contributions to development in Papua New Guinea, notably in sectors such as education, infrastructure, agriculture, and fisheries. Recent agreements on new facilities and training vessels for Papua New Guinea’s National Fisheries University were also discussed.

Acknowledging Papua New Guinea’s cooperation with Japan’s efforts to recover war remains, Ishiba underscored ongoing security cooperation and the potential for materializing extensive collaboration through Official Security Assistance. In response, Marape appreciated Japan’s support and reaffirmed PNG’s commitment to the project.

Highlighting Japan’s support for regional unity, Ishiba committed to implementing pledges made at the Pacific Islands Forum, and he expressed hope for Papua New Guinea’s bid to host APEC in 2033, as well as future engagements with the GREEN×EXPO 2027 initiative.

Additionally, Ishiba announced plans to provide free defense equipment to Papua New Guinea under Japan’s official security assistance program, emphasizing a desire to deepen collaboration for a free and open Indo-Pacific.

This positive development in Japan-PNG relations reflects a hopeful outlook for continued partnership and mutual growth. It sets the stage for empowered collaborations that not only honor shared histories but also pave the way for a brighter, cooperative future in the Pacific region. As both nations gear up for significant anniversaries and cooperative initiatives, there is a strong foundation for addressing upcoming challenges and seizing opportunities for development.
