Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called for a joint military exercise with Fiji as part of their ongoing defense cooperation. This invitation comes during the official visit of Fiji’s Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, who arrived in Indonesia recently.

In a statement made at the Merdeka Palace on Thursday, President Prabowo expressed that Indonesia is open to conducting joint military exercises in all areas, including land, sea, and air. He warmly welcomed the Fijian military to participate in exercises alongside Indonesian forces.

Furthermore, President Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Fiji by supporting the establishment of a regional agricultural training center in Rakiraki, Fiji, which is anticipated to commence this year. He underlined the importance of strengthening human resource capabilities and fostering interpersonal relations between the two nations.

President Prabowo acknowledged the significance of Fiji as an important partner within the Pacific region since the inception of formal diplomatic ties in 1974. He noted the shared challenges and interests that both nations face as island countries, emphasizing their mutual values of sovereignty, independence, and equality among nations.

These initiatives align well with the broader diplomatic efforts seen in recent discussions for enhancing bilateral relations, particularly as both countries aim to tackle shared challenges like sustainable development and humanitarian assistance. The collaboration aims to empower future generations, showcasing a hopeful outlook for cooperation in education, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges.

In light of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations celebrated in 2024, the commitment between Indonesia and Fiji continues to reflect a strong desire for mutual growth and partnership, paving the way for further meaningful collaboration in the Pacific region.
