Parmesh Chand has been appointed as Fiji’s new ambassador to Japan, a decision anticipated to strengthen the longstanding relationship between the two countries. Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), expressed optimism regarding this transition, highlighting the cordial ties that have been in place since official diplomatic relations began in 1970.

Chand, who currently serves as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, is set to succeed Filimoni Waqabaca, who will return to Fiji to become the chief executive officer of the Fiji Development Bank. Dr. Raju noted that this new role for Chand could lead to increased cooperation in essential areas such as trade, tourism, and human resources development.

Japan, recognized as an economic powerhouse, has consistently provided support to Fiji, including scholarships for Fijian students and critical assistance during national disasters, primarily through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Dr. Raju commended JICA for its crucial role in disaster relief efforts, particularly during flooding incidents in Nadi, where their interventions have significantly benefited local communities.

In reciprocation, Fiji is committed to offering educational opportunities for Japanese students who come to enhance their English language skills and engage in academic pursuits. Dr. Raju is confident that during his tenure, Chand will promote Fijian niche products—such as spices, pearls, noni products, and various agricultural goods—to the discerning Japanese market.

Reflecting community support, the NCCI plans to invite Chand to meet its members prior to his departure, demonstrating a warm welcome to this new phase in diplomatic relations. Additionally, Dr. Raju congratulated Waqabaca on his new position, expressing belief in his leadership capabilities which are expected to contribute to economic growth at the Fiji Development Bank.

Overall, this ambassadorial appointment represents a hopeful chapter for Fiji’s engagement with Japan. It not only enables the potential for enhanced collaboration but also promises mutual benefits for both nations as they strive towards shared prosperity. With Chand’s extensive experience and the solid foundation of goodwill between the two countries, the future seems bright for strengthened international partnerships and fruitful cooperation in the years to come.
