Strengthening Ties: Fiji and Germany Forge a New Diplomatic Partnership

The Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Fiji, Dr. Raijeli Taga, was visited by German Ambassador to Fiji, Dr. Andreas Prothmann, in a courtesy call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Suva. This meeting underscored the deepening diplomatic connections between Fiji and Germany, especially following the establishment of the German Embassy in Suva in 2023.

During the meeting, Dr. Taga emphasized Fiji’s commitment to enhancing collaboration with Germany in vital sectors including climate change, energy, defense, security, trade, and UN peacekeeping. She highlighted the importance of both bilateral and multilateral engagements in achieving shared goals.

Ambassador Prothmann congratulated Dr. Taga on her appointment and expressed appreciation for the growing partnership between the two nations. He acknowledged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s active role at the Munich Security Conference, where fruitful discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz took place, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

Looking to the future, Ambassador Prothmann expressed optimism regarding upcoming events, specifically the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue conference next month, where Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Climate Change, Dr. Sivendra Michael, is set to participate. Additionally, he shared news of the expected visit from the President of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in May, which will further solidify ties in academic exchanges and scientific partnerships.

Moreover, the German Federal Foreign Office plans to send an inspection team in March, possibly facilitating a meeting between Dr. Taga and Inspector Ambassador Bernd Finke to explore new opportunities for educational and diplomatic exchanges.

This meeting signals a continued commitment to nurturing relations between Fiji and Germany, which could lead to progressive outcomes, particularly in addressing global issues like climate change, security, and development. Overall, the pathways created through these discussions suggest a hopeful outlook for sustained cooperation and beneficial collaborations.
