Senior leaders from the Fiji Police Force (FPF) and the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) gathered today at the Police Headquarters in Laucala Beach to strengthen their cooperative efforts focusing on custody, rehabilitation, and community reintegration. The meeting was led by Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu and Acting Commissioner of Corrections Sevuloni Naucukidi.
Significant discussions revolved around enhancing the operational synergy between the two institutions and addressing technical issues that impact service delivery throughout the justice system. Commissioner Tudravu highlighted the importance of collaboration, noting that the Police have a crucial role in both custodial and post-custodial phases of criminal justice.
A key outcome from this dialogue was a commitment to deepen collaboration in rehabilitation and reintegration programs for ex-offenders. This involves the implementation of coordinated community policing strategies, which aim to support former inmates in re-entering society successfully and reducing the chances of recidivism.
Acting Commissioner Naucukidi stressed the collective responsibility both agencies share in tackling the underlying causes of criminal behavior, remarking, “Rehabilitation must be holistic, targeting not just individuals but the environments and circumstances that contribute to crime.” He emphasized that through united efforts, not only can reoffending be reduced, but proactive measures can also prevent new individuals from entering the correctional system.
This meeting represents a promising commitment by both the FPF and the FCS towards fostering a safer and more rehabilitative Fiji. The shared focus on rehabilitation will significantly contribute to enhancing community safety and building trust in law enforcement agencies.
The collaborative approach signifies a hopeful outlook for the justice system in Fiji, aiming not just to address existing challenges but to foster a supportive environment that benefits both individuals within the correctional system and the broader community. Effective community policing and rehabilitation initiatives may lead to long-term societal benefits, paving the way for a positive transformation in the lives of many Fijians.
