Mark Brown, the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), has encouraged Foreign Affairs Ministers from the region to avoid relying on the goodwill of others during their meeting in Suva on Friday. In his opening remarks at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Brown highlighted that the region faces increasing geostrategic interests and ongoing challenges, including a worsening climate crisis.

He emphasized the importance of political solidarity among member states, stating, “When one member calls on us, we, as a forum family, are able to respond.” Brown noted the necessity of adapting to new threats such as cyber-attacks and transnational crime, urging the ministers to focus on improving their collective engagement to meet their shared aspirations.

Brown stressed that achieving their vision for 2050 requires strategic and assertive actions, rather than complacency. He expressed his hope for frank and constructive discussions among ministers to optimize their time together.

As he nears the end of his term as chair, Brown thanked the ministers for their support and cooperation throughout his leadership, expressing his honor and privilege in serving at the helm of the Pacific Islands Forum. He acknowledged the collective effort and candor of the members over the past 18 months.
