The Minister for Policing, Hon. Ioane Naivalurua, met with Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Reece Kershaw on March 3, 2025, to strengthen the security partnership between Fiji and Australia. The meeting was attended by Australia’s High Commissioner to Fiji, HE Ewen McDonald, along with a delegation from the AFP.
During their discussions, the two leaders focused on enhancing police support through increased artificial intelligence capabilities and the development of a new police headquarters in Fiji. Minister Naivalurua expressed gratitude for Australia’s ongoing assistance, underscoring the significance of collaboration between the Fiji Police Force and the AFP.
Commissioner Kershaw reiterated the AFP’s commitment to bolstering Fiji’s policing capacity and invited Fijian officers to engage in training alongside their Australian peers, providing them with crucial practical experience. This initiative aligns with the shared goal of improving law enforcement capabilities to address regional security challenges, particularly in relation to organized crime and drug trafficking.
This meeting builds on previous discussions aimed at enhancing law enforcement cooperation within the Pacific, particularly through the Solesolevaki Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement has already facilitated increased joint operations and training initiatives between the two nations, promoting regional stability.
The ongoing commitment from both the AFP and the Fiji Police Force signifies a proactive response to security challenges, illustrating hope for enhanced safety and partnership in the Pacific region. With international support, Fiji is poised to develop its law enforcement framework effectively, which contributes to a safer environment for its citizens.
