Health professionals and representatives from across the Pacific have convened in Nadi to enhance emergency medical care, as emphasized during the opening of the Pacific Island Society for Emergency Care (PISEC) meeting. Dr. Rigamoto Taito, General Manager of Aspen Medical, highlighted the urgency of providing swift and effective emergency responses, especially within the critical “golden hour” post-incident, where early intervention can significantly impact survival chances.

Dr. Taito called for partnerships with local communities to identify emergencies, seek immediate medical assistance, and administer first aid until help arrives. She underscored the importance of community awareness and the necessity for both public members and healthcare workers to possess the relevant skills to respond effectively in emergencies.

Dr. Garry Nou, Vice President of PISEC, reiterated the organization’s commitment to improving emergency care across member countries, recognizing that many patients initially present at primary care facilities. Empowering primary health care workers through training will help alleviate pressure on specialized emergency services, he noted.

The meeting serves as a platform for health professionals to exchange experiences, tackle challenges, and devise strategies to bolster emergency health systems in the Pacific. This collaboration echoes sentiments highlighted at previous gatherings focused on improving healthcare delivery in the region and enhancing workforce capabilities.

There is a positive outlook regarding the ongoing commitment to patient care and emergency response improvements. Efforts like these signify a hopeful step forward in building a more resilient healthcare system in the Pacific, benefitting communities and fostering better health outcomes as partnerships grow and skills are enhanced. Through unified action, the region can address its health challenges and support public safety effectively.
