United States Ambassador to Fiji, Marie Damour, highlighted the strengthening ties between Fiji and the United States during a celebratory event for early Independence Day, held aboard the USS Blue Ridge at Suva Wharf. Speaking from the deck of the flagship, she characterized the past year as a “monumental year” for their bilateral relationship, emphasizing developments in defense cooperation, air connectivity, and cultural exchanges.
Ambassador Damour announced significant developments scheduled for 2024, including the historic first visit by a sitting U.S. Secretary of Defense to Fiji. This visit is part of a broader strategy to enhance military coordination, as illustrated by the signing of the first Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement, which aims to facilitate shared logistics and emergency support. Additionally, discussions have begun on a Status of Forces Agreement to further augment military collaboration.
A key highlight was the groundbreaking Open Skies Agreement signed in August 2024, aimed at boosting trade, tourism, and air connectivity. This agreement paved the way for Fiji Airways to initiate non-stop flights from Nadi to Dallas, marking Fiji’s fifth North American destination.
The event not only commemorated present achievements but also paid tribute to the historical defense ties between the two nations, particularly honoring Fijian soldiers who fought alongside American forces during World War II. Ambassador Damour specifically acknowledged Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu, the first Fijian to receive the Victoria Cross, praising the shared sacrifices that laid the groundwork for the partnership celebrated today.
The ambassador commended the enduring legacy of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces in global peacekeeping operations, affirming their commitment to international service. The event, held aboard one of the oldest active U.S. Navy vessels, served as a significant symbol of the deepening relationship between the two nations.
This ongoing partnership reflects not only a mutual commitment to defense and security but also an optimistic outlook towards collaborative efforts that can enhance both economies, cultures, and communities.
With the continued development of U.S.-Fiji relations, the future appears promising, potentially providing numerous opportunities for enhanced cooperation and partnership in various sectors.
