Mark Brown, chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), urged regional Foreign Affairs Ministers gathered in Suva on Friday to refrain from relying on the goodwill of others. In his opening remarks for the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Brown addressed the growing geostrategic interests in the region, emphasizing that they are facing an escalating climate crisis alongside new challenges like cyber-attacks and transnational crime.
He highlighted the importance of political solidarity, stating that it is crucial for members to be able to respond collectively when one calls for assistance. Brown expressed satisfaction with the ministers’ collaboration in addressing the shared priorities of the region.
He stressed the need for the Pacific Islands to be more strategic and assertive in their engagements to achieve their vision for 2050, ensuring that external partners align with their goals. Brown called for open, constructive, and honest discussions among the ministers, encouraging them to utilize the opportunity effectively.
As he concluded his term as chair, Brown thanked the ministers for their support and cooperation during his leadership, acknowledging the honor of serving in the position for the Cook Islands in the Pacific Islands Forum.
