Street Musicians Making a Difference: The Heartwarming Story of the Washington Tin Band

When you come across a street tin band (qiri kava), consider donating some coins to their collection tins. Your small gesture could provide meals for the hungry, clothing for those in need, or support educational endeavors for young individuals.

Not all street performances are solely for entertainment; many serve a meaningful cause. One such group is the Washington Tin Band from Waigasa in Lami. Since the start of the New Year, they have been spreading joy and purpose through their music in Lami and Suva.

According to band leader Irame Ratulele, this initiative is crucial in keeping young people, especially young men, away from crime and drug abuse. “Most of our members are students, unemployed, or come from underprivileged backgrounds,” Ratulele noted. On a good day, the band can raise up to $800 in donations by performing outside shopping centers and bustling areas.

Their financial approach is community-focused: 10% of the proceeds go to the local church, a portion is set aside for the club’s expenses, and the remainder is distributed among the members to support their families. Some funds are also allocated for educational needs, such as fees and school supplies for secondary and tertiary students.

The band originates from Lami, an area previously known for its challenges, but their presence has created positive change in the community. Ratulele emphasizes the importance of steering younger members away from substance abuse, sharing that many senior members have regrets about their own educational journeys. “We encourage them to see education as the path to a better future and to aspire for meaningful jobs,” he stated.

The Washington Tin Band’s commitment to positive social change was recognized last year when they won the Showcase Tin Band competition in Suva, highlighting both their talent and dedication to uplifting their community.

This story underscores a powerful message: community initiatives can play an integral role in transforming lives and promoting education while combating crime and drug abuse. By supporting local musicians, we can help foster environments where youth can thrive and aim for a brighter, more hopeful future.
