Street Music with a Purpose: How a Tin Band is Changing Lives

Spread the love

The next time you spot an impromptu tin band, known as qiri kava, performing on the street, consider making a small donation to their collection tin. Your generosity might significantly impact someone’s life—helping to provide food, clothing, or educational support for youths in need.

Not all street performances are just for entertainment; some, like the Washington Tin Band from Waigasa in Lami, serve a meaningful purpose. Since the start of the year, this group has been bringing joy and hope through their music in Lami and Suva. Band leader Irame Ratulele emphasized the initiative’s role in keeping young people, particularly boys, away from crime and substance abuse.

“Most of our members are students, unemployed, or hailing from disadvantaged backgrounds,” Ratulele noted. On busy days, they can gather up to $800 in donations, which they collect while performing outside shopping centers and in high-traffic areas.

The funds raised are allocated wisely—10 percent goes to their village church, a portion supports the band, and the rest is divided among members to assist their families. Additionally, some of the money is directed towards education, covering fees and school supplies for secondary and tertiary students.

The Washington Tin Band originates from an area in Lami recognized for its troubles, but their initiatives have brought about transformation. Members are dedicated to promoting a drug-free lifestyle among their younger peers. Ratulele mentioned some senior members’ regrets about neglecting their education in the past, highlighting the importance of schooling to youth and emphasizing that a good education leads to better job opportunities.

Their ongoing commitment to positive change was acknowledged when they won the Showcase Tin Band competition in Suva last year, a testament to their talent and dedication.

Overall, the efforts of street performers like the Washington Tin Band serve as an uplifting reminder of how music can change lives, foster community support, and inspire a brighter future for young people.

By supporting local artists and initiatives like this, we contribute to not only their personal growth but also the community’s overall welfare.
