Dozens of Vanuatu workers returning home from jobs in New Zealand’s orchards and vineyards are currently stranded in Fiji due to suspended commercial flights following a significant earthquake that struck their home country. Bauerfield International Airport in Vanuatu is expected to remain closed until at least Saturday, leading to delays.

Reports indicate that more than 80 workers are trying to arrange temporary accommodation at the Grand Melanesian Hotel in Nadi. Among them, Danson Kirk recounted a frightening moment when he was speaking to his wife in Vanuatu just as the 7.3 magnitude quake occurred. Communication with his family was interrupted as telecommunications failed, and he was left anxious until line services were restored late Tuesday. Fortunately, he later learned that his family was safe.

Emergency rescue teams from Australia and New Zealand are on the ground, working diligently to locate and aid survivors of the earthquake. Kirk expressed the urgency felt by many of the stranded workers to return home and support their families during this difficult time, sharing a heartfelt message of solidarity and prayer for those affected.

Francis Kelep, another worker stranded in Nadi, noted that the sudden influx of returning workers had overwhelmed local accommodations, and some were being re-housed elsewhere. He mentioned that while their employer, Mr. Apple, is managing their travel and accommodations, many in their group are anxious to connect with family members back home.

Despite the stressful situation, the group remained resilient, sharing laughter and playing music to uplift their spirits. Some workers have already received alarming news about their families—injuries and close calls during the quake—highlighting the harsh reality many are facing, yet they remain grateful for the safety of their loved ones and hopeful for a quick return.

This situation brings attention to the strength of community and the support networks people form, even in unsettling times. As these workers await the resumption of flights, their determination to return home and help their families showcases their resilient spirit in overcoming adversity.

In conclusion, the solidarity among the workers and their unwavering hope for a reunion with family during these challenging circumstances provides a ray of optimism amidst the disaster.
