A group of Vanuatu workers returning from employment on orchards and vineyards in New Zealand are currently stranded in Fiji due to ongoing flight cancellations caused by a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake in Vanuatu. As of Wednesday, local authorities indicated that Bauerfield International Airport is expected to remain closed until at least Saturday, delaying the workers’ return home.
More than 80 workers, seeking accommodations at the Grand Melanesian Hotel in Nadi, expressed their desire to return and check on their families. Danson Kirk shared a poignant moment when he was on the phone with his wife, who was affected by the earthquake. Telecommunications were disrupted immediately after the quake, causing him hours of concern before he could confirm his family’s safety.
Emergency teams from Australia and New Zealand have been mobilized to assist in rescue efforts in Vanuatu, highlighting regional cooperation in times of crisis. Kirk emphasized their commitment to returning home to support their families and communities, sending a message of solidarity despite their distance.
Stranded worker Francis Kelep noted that their arrival in Fiji had overwhelmed the hotel’s capacity, leading to some being transferred to other accommodations. He shared the emotional turmoil of uncertainty regarding family safety, stating a strong desire to return home as quickly as possible.
Others in the group also shared distressing stories about loved ones affected by the earthquake, underscoring the urgency of their situation. Despite the overwhelming circumstances, the workers attempted to uplift each other’s spirits through music and jokes.
While the situation is undoubtedly challenging, there is hope in the community’s resilience and the efforts being made to restore communication and travel. The dedication shown by the Vanuatu workers to support their families back home serves as a poignant reminder of the strength of community bonds in times of crisis.
