Dozens of workers from Vanuatu, who were returning home after working on New Zealand orchards and vineyards, find themselves stranded in Fiji due to ongoing commercial flight cancellations to their earthquake-affected nation. The Bauerfield International Airport in Vanuatu is expected to remain closed at least until Saturday, complicating efforts for these returning workers to reunite with their families.

Reports indicate that similar disruptions are being experienced by workers heading to Vanuatu from Australia, with airlines in Australia promptly halting their flights to Port Vila. A group of over 80 workers shared their experiences while trying to arrange for accommodation at the Grand Melanesian Hotel in Nadi.

Among them is Danson Kirk, who was in contact with his wife when a powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck on Tuesday. He recalled the sudden conversation interruption when the quake hit, causing telecommunications to fail in Vanuatu. Fortunately, contact was restored by late Tuesday, and Kirk learned that his family was safe.

Emergency teams from both Australia and New Zealand have been deployed to aid in rescue operations, focusing on locating survivors amid the devastation. Kirk expressed a sense of urgency among his group to return home to assist their families and communities.

Francis Kelep, another stranded worker, noted that the sudden influx of arrivals had overwhelmed the hotel accommodations, leading some to be transferred elsewhere. Many workers have yet to reach their families and are concerned for their safety. Despite the uncertainty, they are attempting to maintain morale through music and camaraderie.

Kelep recounted instances of hardship among his colleagues, including one whose wife was injured during the earthquake. He emphasized gratitude for survival and support for those who have suffered greater losses.

In these trying times, the solidarity and hope expressed by the Vanuatu workers, despite their own challenges, highlight the resilience of community and family bonds. The workers are optimistic about getting home soon and are committed to supporting their families during this difficult period.

This situation, while challenging, showcases the strength of the human spirit and the importance of standing together during adversity.
