Passengers aboard the Lady Daya faced significant challenges after being unexpectedly asked to leave the ship while docked at the Narayan Jetty in Walu Bay, Suva. Among the affected passengers was 79-year-old Ratu Ilitomasi Verenakadavu, who recounted spending the night on a wooden chair due to the lack of prior arrangements for lodging. He commented, “We didn’t know where to go. Many of us had to sleep on the ground with no proper arrangements made for us.”
The situation was exacerbated by the fact that many passengers were unable to retrieve their belongings, including essential items, as the vessel set sail for another island shortly after they disembarked.
In light of this situation, passengers are calling on the authorities to investigate and implement measures to ensure such incidents do not happen in the future. Their appeal highlights the importance of communication and support for travelers, especially in unexpected situations.
While Goundar Shipping has not yet responded to inquiries for clarification, it is hoped that this incident will lead to improved protocols to safeguard passenger welfare during maritime travel in the future, ensuring such unfortunate events are minimized.
