Stormwater Scandal: Suva’s Businesses in Hot Water!

Spread the love

In Suva, several business operators have been found to have illegally connected their establishments to the city’s wastewater system without the approval of the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF). The issue came to light following a smoke test survey conducted in response to a sewage water overflow incident on Cumming Street.

WAF’s CEO, Dr. Amit Chanan, reported that the survey revealed 11 businesses with unauthorized stormwater connections. Furthermore, it was noted that a staggering 78% of connections in the entire Suva Central Business District (CBD) are deemed illegal. WAF has since reached out to these businesses, urging them to arrange proper stormwater connections to alleviate the strain on the sewer network.

Dr. Chanan emphasized the importance of compliance, warning that heavy rainfall can lead to stormwater overloading wastewater lines, ultimately resulting in unwanted overflows. He has called on customers to assess their stormwater connections and eliminate any illegal discharges into the sewer system.

Efforts to rectify these illegal connections present a significant opportunity for businesses to comply with regulations, ensuring a more sustainable and efficient wastewater management system. By working together, business operators can help maintain a cleaner environment for the community, contributing to public health and safety.

This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to environmental regulations, underscoring the need for collaboration between governmental authorities and business owners to protect vital infrastructure and public welfare.
