Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has successfully restored 80 percent of the power supply in the Central Division and 20 percent in the Western Division of Viti Levu following a significant power outage. The outage, which began at 2:08 PM, was triggered by severe weather conditions that included heavy rain, thunderstorms, and persistent lightning, particularly impacting the highland and interior areas.
The incident was caused by damage to the 132,000-volt transmission line that carries electricity from the Wailoa Power Station, resulting in widespread disruption across the island. Thousands of customers were left without power as the lightning activity had been ongoing for several days, leading to this unplanned outage.
EFL reassured the public that they are taking all necessary measures to address the faults in the system and expedite the restoration process, which is expected to take an additional 2 to 3 hours, or perhaps longer due to the continuing adverse weather conditions.
This recent power disruption highlights the challenges utility providers face due to unpredictable weather. However, it is also a testament to the resilience and efficiency of EFL’s response teams, who prioritize safety and reliability in their operations. Previous similar incidents have shown how swiftly EFL can mobilize resources to restore service, demonstrating their commitment to serving the community even in difficult conditions.
Overall, while adverse weather may lead to interruptions in power supply, the prompt actions taken by EFL show a strong dedication to maintaining essential services. Residents can be hopeful as the teams continue their efforts to ensure that power is restored in a safe and timely manner.
