Stéphane Auvray has been named the new head coach of the Fiji National Men’s Football team, a pivotal appointment made official by the Fiji Football Association. Auvray, a former Guadeloupe football captain, steps into the role following the departure of Rob Sherman, whose contract ended prematurely after unsatisfactory results, including a heavy loss to New Zealand during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Oceania qualifiers.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Auvray acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, “I’m very thankful as well because I believe there’s a lot to be done.” The coach sees a significant opportunity in the upcoming OFC Professional League set for 2026, aiming to enhance the competitive nature of games for Fijian players. “The more games we have, especially in this region, the better because your players will improve and likewise the overall environment,” he noted.
Bringing a robust background to the position, Auvray has previously served as a FIFA talent coach in Saint Lucia and Jamaica, where he played a critical role in developing high-performance training programs for young athletes. His professional career included playing for notable teams such as Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards and Brunei DPMM FC in the Singapore Premier League.
In his opening remarks, Auvray expressed gratitude towards the Fiji FA, emphasizing his hope to make a significant impact in the years to come. “It is not always easy, but I hope I can contribute to Fiji Football, and we can accomplish great things,” he stated, echoing a sentiment shared by many supporters who are eager for a revitalized direction in Fijian football.
Auvray’s appointment marks a hopeful turning point for the national team as they aim to improve both domestically and on the international stage. This commitment to nurturing player development reflects the Fiji FA’s broader strategy to enhance the country’s competitiveness in football, fostering optimism among fans and players alike for the future of the sport in Fiji.
