Residents of Chandraiya Street in Nadera, Nasinu, are increasingly concerned about the foul odor coming from an overflowing sewer system in their area, prompting many to close their windows and doors. Dalip Chand, a 70-year-old resident, reported that the sewer chamber in front of his home has been overflowing since August. Despite his efforts to address the situation, including a phone call and a visit to the Water Authority on September 6, he says no action has been taken.
Chand recounted that he also visited the Kinoya sewerage department, where officials acknowledged the issue but failed to implement any solutions. “They come, see, and go,” he lamented, expressing frustration about the ongoing unhygienic conditions.
Another resident, Roshika Singh, 45, echoed his concerns, noting that a team from the Water Authority of Fiji had inspected the site multiple times without taking further steps to resolve the issue. She highlighted the health risks associated with the sewage leak, saying, “This is affecting us so badly… This smell is going right inside my house, in my bedroom with flies.”
Singh stressed that the densely populated area makes the situation even more urgent, as children walk to school nearby and families are unable to enjoy outdoor activities, especially with Diwali approaching. “It’s been two months since we’ve complained,” she noted. “How will we celebrate outside when we have this sewage overflow with an unbearable foul smell?”
In response to the community’s grievances, a spokesperson for the Water Authority of Fiji, Peni Shute, stated that their inspection revealed the blockage was located on the owner’s side of the chamber.
