Good steering control is vital for ensuring vehicle stability and direction, according to Irimaia Rokosawa, CEO of the Land Transport Authority (LTA). He highlighted the importance of this often-overlooked aspect of road safety amid recent tragic incidents, including the death of a young man who lost control of his vehicle near Kalokolevu Village.
Rokosawa pointed out that while speeding, fatigue, and reckless driving are common causes of accidents, improper steering control also significantly contributes to the rise in road fatalities. “Maintaining both hands on the steering wheel may seem like a simple rule, but it’s essential for safe driving,” he said. He urged all motorists to adopt this practice diligently, framing it as a life-saving habit rather than just a guideline.
This advisory aligns with the LTA’s ongoing commitment to boosting road safety through public awareness campaigns and effective enforcement of traffic regulations. The agency emphasizes that drivers should always be in full control of their vehicles, especially during emergencies.
Rokosawa also expressed concern over the risky behaviors observed among drivers, such as leaning out of windows, which can prevent proper steering control and lead to delayed reactions to unexpected road hazards. He noted that these risks are especially high for Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators, who are charged with the safety of multiple passengers.
