Stay Vigilant: How to Protect Your Home from Rising Crime

The public is being encouraged to adopt comprehensive security measures to protect their homes and belongings. Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations (ACP) Livai Driu highlighted the increased risk during this time of year, as numerous events and gatherings draw families away from their residences, leaving them vulnerable to crime.

“There are several events happening, and families are leaving their homes unattended, which creates opportunities for criminal activity,” ACP Driu noted. He also emphasized the importance of school management regularly assessing the security of their institutions, as schools can also be targets for crime.

A 27-year-old man was arrested yesterday in connection with an aggravated robbery that occurred at a secondary school in Lautoka. The individual allegedly broke into the office of a senior staff member and stole various items. Lautoka Police are currently working to locate the suspect’s accomplices as the investigation proceeds.

ACP Driu has warned that some individuals may resort to desperate measures in pursuit of quick financial gains during this period, prompting the police to urge the community to stay vigilant to avoid becoming victims of theft and robbery.

He recommended specific measures for securing homes, advising residents to identify and fortify any vulnerable entry points, check the integrity of locks on doors and windows, and consider replacing them if necessary. When leaving for extended periods, he suggested alerting friends or neighbors to observe for any suspicious activities.

Additionally, he encouraged the formation of neighborhood chat groups to share timely information about local incidents. Residents should develop habits such as ensuring all doors and windows are locked when leaving, and advised against leaving valuables in vehicles to deter theft.
