Stay Vigilant: ANZ Fiji Warns of Holiday Scams

ANZ Fiji has alerted its customers across the Pacific to remain vigilant against scams, particularly during this hectic holiday season. Rabih Yazbek, the country head of ANZ Fiji, emphasized that scammers often seize this opportunity to trick individuals concerning various services, including parcel deliveries and vacation bookings.

“As we approach Christmas and New Year, scammers tend to exploit the busy nature of this period, preying on those who may be distracted,” Mr. Yazbek remarked. He advised customers to trust their instincts before sharing personal information, clicking on unfamiliar links, or making online purchases.

To bolster consumer knowledge about scams and fraud, ANZ has initiated programs aimed at enhancing customer awareness. Earlier this year, Eli Hirschauge, ANZ’s head of Information Security, visited the Pacific to discuss cybersecurity and fraud prevention with customers, government entities, the Reserve Bank of Fiji, and local media outlets.

“It’s imperative to stay updated on the latest scam tactics,” Mr. Yazbek noted, adding that scamming methods are increasingly becoming more sophisticated. “Awareness serves as our best defense,” he stated.

Customers are encouraged to regularly review their bank statements or banking apps and promptly report any suspicious activity. Quick intervention can thwart potential financial losses. Furthermore, Mr. Yazbek reminded customers that ANZ would never request personal information via email or text message, urging them to be cautious—“If something feels amiss, it likely is.”

This alert from ANZ reflects a broader commitment to consumer protection and education in the face of rising cyber threats, providing hope that increased awareness can significantly reduce these incidents during the festive season and beyond.

In summary, ANZ Fiji is proactive in safeguarding its customers against fraudulent activities during a particularly vulnerable time of year, underscoring the importance of vigilance and awareness in the community.
