Fiji’s Consumer Council is warning shoppers to be cautious while making online purchases, especially with Eid approaching. As many consumers look to online platforms for traditional attire and accessories, the Council has observed a rise in fraudulent sellers taking advantage of the festive season. CEO Seema Shandil urged consumers to ensure that products are delivered on time and as advertised.
Shandil highlighted an alarming trend of scams where sellers request partial or full upfront payments and often fail to fulfill orders. This has led to numerous complaints, including 44 lodged against an online trader in Lautoka alone, where customers paid for items that never arrived. In light of this, the Consumer Council is collaborating with the police to investigate these fraudulent practices actively.
In previous festive seasons such as Diwali, consumers have faced similar issues with price gouging and misleading advertisements. During Diwali last year, the Council recorded 163 complaints involving over $15,000, indicating a persistent challenge in protecting consumers during high-demand periods.
Consumers are encouraged to verify the credibility of online sellers, avoid impulsive purchases, and retain receipts to address any disputes effectively. The Council stands firm in its commitment to preventing consumer fraud and urges anyone who experiences issues to report them to the National Consumer Helpline or via email.
This holiday season, let’s stay vigilant and celebrate Eid with the joy it deserves, while being mindful of online purchasing pitfalls. By being proactive and informed, consumers can maintain the spirit of the holiday without falling victim to scams.
