The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is advising residents to remain alert during Diwali as its teams are actively monitoring compliance with the FCCC Act 2010. Their focus is on preventing misleading promotions, excessive pricing, and other unethical practices by traders.
FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham emphasized that while Diwali is a time for happiness and celebrations, it is also when dishonest merchants may attempt to exploit consumers.
With many sales and promotions happening during the festive period, he urges consumers to exercise caution, thoroughly review terms and conditions, and make informed purchasing decisions. Abraham warns that offers that appear too good to be true may carry hidden pitfalls.
FCCC teams are deployed throughout Fiji to protect consumers from potential fraud. The commission has already performed 78 inspections aimed at closely monitoring businesses and deterring price gouging and deceptive marketing practices, ensuring that everyone can celebrate peacefully.
Abraham also encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities, such as inflated prices or misleading promotions, to FCCC without delay.
